making God laugh by Sean Grennan

Directed by:
Rhonda Caldwell & Aidan Tessier

Ruth and Bill have three children: their oldest, Rick, is a flashy ex-football player living the party life and always looking for the next get-rich-quick scheme; middle-child Maddie is an aspiring actress who constantly deals with her mother’s scorn; and their pride and joy – the youngest, Thomas - has decided to become a priest. The plans they make for their lives may amuse the almighty, but the way those plans unfold over the years will reveal the faith an ordinary family discovers they have in each other.

Theatre Wellesley is pleased to invite you to their production of Making God Laugh, where the hopes, fears, imperfections and love shared by one family are told through a series of four snapshots of their lives together across the decades. It’s a funny, poignant and honest look at the bonds of love and family that hold us together and the unspoken secrets that can sometimes try to tear us apart.

Making God Laugh has attracted some of the finest talent in amateur theatre in the region, and for a show that spans four decades the production team made the bold decision to cast on the basis of character instead of age: at some point across the four scenes each actor will be playing their character both younger, older, and at the performer’s actual age; and one character, the pivotal role of family matriarch Ruth, will be played at different stages of her life by two different actresses.
